Western University is moving forward with a new vehicle bridge to replace the existing Springett Bridge, with the original structure being converted to pedestrian and cyclist use only.
On the surface, that sounds like a win for active transportation. But the details matter.
The concern raised by Ward 6 Councillor Sam Trosow is about what this bridge actually does to the surrounding area. A new vehicle bridge creates a commuter route through campus, increasing traffic across university grounds and potentially reducing safety for the students and pedestrians who use that space every day.
The university is holding public consultations, but reports suggest the conversation is focused on the look of the bridge rather than its function, its traffic impacts, or its effect on the surrounding neighbourhood.
We want to hear from you. Do you live, work, or study near Western? Do you use Springett Bridge? Do you have concerns about traffic diversion through campus or the surrounding streets?
This is a significant piece of infrastructure and the community deserves a full conversation about it, not just the colour of the railings.
