London is at a crossroads, and right now, we are headed in the wrong direction. To course-correct, we need to understand the realities on the ground—which means listening to the people doing the hardest work in our community.
This past Tuesday, May 12, I had the opportunity to tour the London Cares facility at 8:30 AM with Executive Director Chris Moss. I was incredibly moved by the dedication of the frontline workers who are addressing high-acuity individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction. I also had the absolute pleasure of meeting the lovely volunteers and staff from the Sisters of St. Joseph’s, who run the facility’s café.
When you walk through our downtown now, the reality is stark. What became abundantly clear during my visit is that not every person experiencing homelessness faces the same challenges. The people coming into the care of these frontline workers include seniors suffering from dementia, requiring a completely different level of empathy and support.
Understanding this complexity is exactly why, following that tour, I attended a workshop hosted by the Alzheimer Society of Southwest Ontario, led by Steph Oulette. I learned about the vital issues, resources, and programs available for those living with dementia, as well as the immense challenges faced by caregivers who are supporting a loved one.
As your Mayor, my campaign is centered on practical, results-driven priorities. What I saw on Tuesday directly reinforces my commitment to my core pillars:
A City Where People Feel Safe: We will address the root causes of the crisis on our streets while ensuring that public spaces remain clean, safe, and accessible for everyone.
A City That Works: We need to stop the "analysis paralysis". Leadership means taking calculated risks and making decisions. Decisive leadership starts with doing the work, not just studying it.
We are currently stuck studying problems while the actual solutions pass us by. By supporting our frontline workers, caregivers, and community organizations, we can ensure that we invest in the wraparound supports that keep our most vulnerable neighbors from falling through the cracks.
Let’s get London back to being the clean, safe, and vibrant city we all know it can be.
